Large dogs are needed mainly for the purpose of guarding. There are many other tasks performed by the different types of big dogs. Let us obtain information about the large dogs.
Big dogs are normally those which people use for herding. But, there also are other categories used to classify/categorize the big dogs. Such hounds can look after goats, sheep and other livestock animals. Intelligence and agility are the important qualities that big dogs possess. In cities, people prefer big dogs for the purpose of security of the house.

Different Types of Large Dogs

The dogs that are large are considered as good for guarding and which can be trained with ease. These dogs are either scenthounds or sighthounds. The former type can track objects individuals easily on the basis of scent. Sighthounds on the other hand possess a sharp vision. Important types of big dogs are described here.

Mastiff

This is one of big dogs that originated in England. Height of the male and female is approximately 30 inch. and 27 inch. respectively. The male Mastiff weighs between 150 - 250 lbs, while the female has a weight between 120 and 200 lbs.
A large skull and loose skin are important characteristics of these dogs; it is basically a guarding dog. The Mastiff's lineage can be traced all the way back to 1800s. This dog was also used in wars. There are many different types of mastiffs and these are suited for different tasks like guarding, herding, rescuing, pulling, etc.

Irish Wolfhound

This dog was traditionally used for wolf hunting and hence the name. The Irish Wolfhound is probably the biggest dogs with a height that ranges from 30 - 35 inches at the shoulders. The minimum weight of males and females is 120 lbs and 90 lbs respectively.
This dog is placed in the category of sighthounds because, its ability to track an object by means of sight is stronger that of tracking scent. Along with sharp vision, this dog possess the following characteristics: muscular body, powerful legs and lean body.

Scottish Deerhound

This dog originated in Scotland and possesses a height that ranges from 30 - 32 inches (males). Females too have a minimum height of 28 inch. These dogs weigh between 75 and 100 lbs.
The Scottish Deerhouds, as their name suggests were used for the purpose of hunting deer. Breeding of these dogs on a large-scale took place in the 1400s. Their good vision places Scottish Deerhounds places in the category of sighthounds.

Giant Schnauzer

This canine doesn't shed much. Actually there is no such dog which doesn't shed at all. Giant Schnauzer is however, a dog that shed lesser than most of the other types. The Giant Schnauzer which originates in Germany was mainly used for the purpose of guarding. Height of this dog at shoulders ranges from 23-28 inches. This dog weighs between 70 and 100 lbs.

Great Dane

One of the tallest dog breeds of the world, Great Danes possess a height that ranges from 28 - 32 inches.
These dogs weight between 100 and 120 pounds. The Great Dane dogs are basically working dogs that originated in Germany. The great size of these dogs makes them domineering; Great Danes also are a bit difficult to manage in comparison to other canine species.

Leonberger

This dog originated in Germany and its weight ranges from 65 - 130 lbs. The Leonberger is mainly a working dog used in rescue operations.
