German Shepherd Mixes

The German Shepherd mixes are cross breed dogs with one parent as a German Shepherd and any other dog breed as other parent. The word 'mutt' or in some cases, the term 'mongrel' is also used in reference with that of a German Shepherd.

A German Shepherd with mixed parentage,retains few qualities from both sides.Usually, mixed breeds of German Shepherd do not have health issues at the time of birth.The processes of experimental breeding and selective breeding are used to check which parental combination produce the most healthy offspring.Now let us have a look at the different mixed breeds.

The Shepadoodle is a mix of a German Shepherd and a standard Poodle. Labradoodles are often used for breeding with German Shepherds instead of the standard poodles. This dog is recognized and accepted by the American Canine Hybrid Club.

As mentioned above,these dogs tend to retain the characteristics of its parentage.Usually, the Shepadoodle dog is fierce, protective and aggressive,just like a Shepherd.Yet,it is sociable like the poodles and labradoodles.Shepadoodle usually retains the facial and fur traits of poodles,whereas their coat color and texture is derived from the German Shepherd.

This is another German Shepherd mix which exhibits a behavior similar to that of Shepapoodle. The Golden Shepherd is sometimes spelled as Goldenshephard. As the name suggests, this dog is half German Shepherd and half Golden Retriever.

The Golden Shepherd has a unique coat color. Its appearance mostly resembles that of German Shepherd; however, the golden shade of the Retriever dog also is observed in the coat of a Golden Shepherd.

These dogs can get aggressive when provoked by other dogs. They are however, affectionate, and also protective about the family they live with (especially children). The dog exhibits a sociable behavior unless provoked. This breed is recognized by the International Designer Canine Registry and the Designer Breed Registry.

The mix between Labrador breeds and German Shepherds produces the German Shepherd Lab. The German Shepherd Lab, in most cases, looks like a Labrador due to its fur. The coat is very much similar to that of the Labradors.

The similarity between a Labrador and a German Shepherd Lab mix is limited only up to the appearance of the coat. .

There are many anatomical differences associated with the built, structure of the snout, mouth, and other features between Labradors and German Shepherd Labs. This dog is extremely loyal and protective towards its family. This dog also exhibits a loving nature and is very affectionate towards family members

A killer among all mixes, the Belgian Shepherd Malinois is a mix of the Malinois and German Shepherd breeds; it is named after the Belgian city of Malines, hence the odd name. The coat of this dog is dark fawn in color, which has small traces of black fur. The head and the snout have a black hair structure, very much like that of a German Shepherd. An intense killer instinct, intelligence, fierce loyalty, and an adoring affection, has made this brave dog a favorite of K-9 units all over the world, including the United States Secret Services.

The Border Collie German Shepherd is a cross breed of two different types of shepherd dogs, the Border Collie and the German Shepherd. These dogs have a physique similar to a German Shepherd's.

This dog is however, smaller in size to that of a German Shepherd. Their coat is black and white like that of a collie, but a marked presence of golden and black color is also found in some instances.

These dogs have a deadly and frightening glare, and ironically a beautiful pair of eyes. This trait is a specialty of herding dogs. The Border Collie German Shepherd dogs are affectionate towards their families, and do not warm up to strangers.

Now as mentioned above, these mix breed dogs retain some traits from both parental lines. Hence, if you are planning to adopt one, make it a point to keenly research the behavior of each dog. This is because German Shepherd mixes have German Shepherd as one of the parents, and the other one belongs to a completely different breed. Hence, these dogs do not depict behavior completely like that of a German Shepherd.
