Diabetic Dog Treats

Diabetes mellitus is not uncommon in dogs and it occurs due to the loss of balanced insulin metabolism in the body. Many dogs are diagnosed with canine diabetes each year and one can say that it is one of the most common dog illnesses.
Whatever be the type of diabetes that your dog is affected by, controlling blood glucose levels of the dog is your prime duty as a responsible pet owner. Along with the prescribed medications, you also need to choose healthy diabetic dog food for your pet.
Since a diabetic dog's food is totally different from that of a normal dog, you need to be quite careful while selecting dog treats as well.

Recipes

If your dog is diagnosed with diabetes, then you need to be quite careful while choosing his food. This fact doesn't restrict you from feeding your dog some easy-to-make dog treats. Here are some easy, home-cooked, healthy recipes for your diabetic dog.

Recipe #1

Ingredients
  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 1 cup oats
  • 2 cups pureed pumpkin
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ⅔ cup canola oil
  • ½ tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 4 eggs
  • ½ tsp vanilla essence
Procedure
In a large bowl, mix the flour, oats, cinnamon, and nutmeg and combine them well. Add the baking powder and baking soda to it, mix it again, and leave aside. Take a separate bowl and add the eggs, oil, and pumpkin puree to it.
Next, add the vanilla essence and make the mixture into a smooth batter. Add the egg batter to the flour mixture and combine them well. Pour this mixture into small muffin molds and preheat the oven. Bake these muffins at about 350 ºF for about 20 minutes, and the dog treat is ready.

Recipe #2

Ingredients
  • 1½ pounds beef liver, cut into pieces
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup whole wheat flour
Procedure
Chop the liver in a food processor and then add eggs and flour into it. Pulse it again until you get a smooth batter. If you have a smaller food processor, then put the chopped liver in a bowl and then add eggs and flour to it and mix well. Preheat the oven to about 350 ºF.
Take a jellyroll pan (10 x 15 inches) and line it with parchment paper. Once you are done with it, spread the flour batter evenly in the pan. Bake it for about 15 minutes and cut it into square shapes. You can use a pizza cutter to cut these homemade treats.

Recipe #3

Ingredients
  • ½ cup chopped carrots
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • 3 cups wheat flour
  • ½ cup chopped spinach
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • ¾ cup water
Procedure
Take a bowl and add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, carrots, and spinach to it. Mix well and keep it aside. In another bowl, mix the eggs, oil, and water. Combine both the mixtures and knead it well to form a dough. Create bagels of the dough and place them on a baking sheet. Bake the bagels in a preheated oven at 350 ºF for about 45 minutes.
