Boxer Dogs Personality

Boxer dogs are known for their energetic nature and playfulness. They like to run around and stay active all the time. They are said to be natural entertainers. No other breed can match the boxer in terms of the youthful exuberance that they display.

Boxers get their name from the habit of standing on their hind legs and lifting up their front paws like a boxer. Let us understand more about the boxer dog's personality through the following paragraphs.

The Brabanter Bullenbeisser breed of Belgium was the one from which today's boxer dog has evolved. The crossing between Brabanter Bullenbeisser and English Bulldogs carried out in 1830s led to the development of today's boxer breed. They were introduced in the USA in the earlier part of 20th century.

Later in the 1940s, they became popular in America and were mainly used as show dogs. These squarely built canines with medium size can weigh around 60 lbs. and reach the height between 20-25 inches.

Earlier, boxers were primarily raised as guard dogs. The menacing look on their faces should not be confused with aggression. These are in fact, affectionate and lovable creatures who are full of energy. Due to their enthusiastic and energetic nature, they need a lot of exercise.

It is necessary to channelize their energy in a positive and proper manner. Disruptive behavior can result from lack of enough exercise. Such behavior can be resolved with proper training. It is necessary to understand that, once the dogs become habitual to behaving in a disruptive manner, it becomes difficult to control them.

The stubborn and headstrong boxers should therefore, be trained early in their life. They can be good entertainers, owing to their playful disposition. They can wag their tail, jump around, dance and wiggle in order to release their energy and thereby entertaining the owner.

Boxer dogs need to socialize and therefore, the owner should be attentive and careful about their needs. It is best to raise them with companions. They are very attached to the family members and care for them. This is one of the reasons why they prove to be excellent guard dogs.

However, when it comes to strangers, these dogs can turn apprehensive. They exhibit a unique characteristic of maturing rather slowly as compared to other breeds. The puppy like behavior, unlike other breeds, stays for many years. It is only after 3-4 years that they become a bit stable.

Boxers are even-tempered and rarely does one see them becoming aggressive. They are known for their courageous nature. The behavioral traits such as hyperactivity or shyness are not observed in this breed. If such characteristics are seen, then one should check for the pedigree.

Chances are that, the dog is poorly bred and doesn't show the requisite behavioral traits. The naughty/mischievous behavior sets them apart from other breeds. Behavioral problems may crop up if they are kept isolated. They love to be in company of human beings and keeping them engaged is good for their mental as well physical health.
